This journey began with a simple question: how can more community residents take part, not just observe?
Since then, it has grown from early performance experiences into a broader exploration of civic engagement, youth participation, and the role of community in shaping meaningful change.
Early involvement in dance, music, and performance created opportunities to connect with community audiences. Through these experiences, I began to notice a gap between those who performed and those who simply observed.
This gradually led to a question: how could more community residents take part, not just observe? This became the starting point for creating more inclusive, community-based activities.
I started by organizing small local events where residents could actively participate. Over time, these activities grew into more structured community initiatives involving youth participation.
As my involvement in community work continued, I was recognized as “Miss Teenager York Region 2024” by Pageant Group Canada.
I also received congratulatory certificates from Members of Parliament, acknowledging my continued involvement in community service and civic engagement.
Following this recognition, I continued participating in community and councilor-led events, representing both my foundation and my role as Miss Teenager York Region.
At the LoveMax Charity Festival, I engaged with community leaders, including the Mayor, Members of Provincial Parliament and local councilor through conversations and activities focused on inclusion and support for children with special needs.
Through these interactions, I began to notice the different challenges faced by individuals and families within the community, and the importance of building awareness and support around these needs.
This experience started to shift how I approached community work, making me more attentive to individuals and groups who may not always be easily seen or heard.
Through continued participation in community and councilor-led events, I engaged with local leaders and community members through discussions and public activities.
These experiences helped me better understand the needs within the community and how everyday participation connects with broader civic conversations.
Building on these experiences, I began to bring what I observed in the community back into the activities I organized.
I started to adapt these activities to better support participation, creating opportunities for youth to engage more actively and, in some cases, offering support for women facing short-term challenges.
Leading the Community Runway
Alongside these efforts, I was invited to attend the Prime Minister’s Lunar New Year Reception at Parliament Hill on two occasions.
I also received recognition in the form of leadership and academic awards.
Overall, this journey has been shaped by continuous engagement with my local community and the experiences I have gained through participating in and developing community initiatives.
It has helped me understand community work not only as a series of events, but as an ongoing process of listening, responding, and creating spaces for participation.
Moving forward, I hope to continue building on this foundation by further exploring how local initiatives can contribute to more inclusive and connected communities.
